Yesterday I set myself up perfectly to dive right in to riveting the stiffeners so here we go! First thing to do is put a rivet in every hole and then tape it in. Here's a picture with all the rivets in there place. Next, set the stiffeners in there place and commence back riveting. This is what a rivet that's been set by back riveting looks like. Pretty darn good. Here's the finished product with all the stiffeners back riveted to the right elevator. Well I felt like I was motoring right along both today and on the project in general and it felt too good to be true. About 30 seconds after I drove the last rivet today, I heard a knock on the door. Yeah, the kind of knock I've been waiting for/dreading... The guy who lives in the apartment directly below me has a kind of angry demeanor on his face as he stands outside my door. Apparently, when you back rivet, not only is it quite loud but the force is transmitted directly through the floor to the apartment below and it sounds like the roof is about to collapse by way of a jackhammer and causes the dog to go nuts. Who knew...? I didn't. I explained that I was building an airplane (he actually changed from pissed at this point to somewhat interested/intrigued) and that I was trying keep the noise to times when everyone else was at work. My schedule allows me pretty great flexibility so today I was working at 2:00PM when I thought no one be around to care about the noise. Now for an aside: I have noticed regardless of what time I pull into the parking lot or leave, my neighbor's car is ALWAYS there and he walks his dog and smokes outside on the hour religiously. It appeared to me that he never leaves. Back to the story. I explain to my neighbor I tried to work when everyone was at work and he says "Oh I don't have a job I got cut a few months ago so I just stay here all day." Turns out he never leaves! How do you pay for your apartment? What do you do all day? Why aren't you out looking for a job?!? Anyway, lest I get evicted, it looks like I will be constructionally challenged. Progress is sure to slow not just because of this but because of finishing up this quarter of grad school and the holidays coming up.
