I did a huge amount of work today but it was the kind of work where there in no major visible progress. I started out by clecoing together the aileron structure. This was a little fickle going together but thats just because all the parts fit really well together. Also of note here in this shot is the little heater. It hasn't gotten above 25 the last few days so it was super cold in the garage. While it didn't make it hot in there, it at least made it manageable. What was really nice was just reaching over and warming up my fingers occasionally. You can see the steel pipe in the nose of the aileron in the picture above. Well these need to have holes drilled in them for the pop rivets. These pipes are ridiculously hard and thick-walled and I did not want to ruin my #30 bits so I went and bought some 1/8" cobalt drill bits to do the dirty work. Here they are drilled and countersunk. I used lots of Boe-lube on the countersink to keep them from getting hot and breaking off the pilot in the hole. I don't know if that was necessary as the pipes were around 25 degrees so the countersinking probably didn't generate enough heat to get into the danger zone. (Do you have Kenny Loggins stuck in your head...? What about now?) Finally, I finished out the night with a ton of deburring and dimpling while watching the Patriots crush the Broncos.
