Wings :: Flaps
Finished dimpling, made cradle, clecoed flaps
1.5 Hours

I made it into the garage for the third straight night, which hasn't happened in a while due to me not going in the garage and working on the project for three consecutive nights in a while. Anyway, as promised yesterday, I had about 15 minutes worth of C-frame dimpling to finish up. I didn't like this at all. Due to the weird shapes of the flap skins, I had to go with the male die on bottom. This makes it difficult to get the die in the rivet hole as well as makes it super easy to put horrible scratches in the skins. Much care was taken to ensure good dimpling!

After finishing that up, I moved on to making the cradle to assemble the flaps in. I used the wood from the wing crates for these bad boys. All it took was a little tracing of an end rib to get the shape and about 5 minutes of work to get them cut out.

Then I moved onto assembling the flaps. I clecoed the ribs in place.

Then I riveted them to the rear spar. It doesn't actually say when to do this in the directions (in fact, it says something inane like "rivet together the flaps") but this is the last time there will be access to these particular rivets so in they went! I put the manufactured head on the forward side of the spar for better aerodynamics (or so the thinner rib material wouldn't distort during squeezing...). Although it looks shadowy in the picture, both rivet head and rib end are flush with the rear spar.

Then I simple clecoed the top skin on, cleaned up, and got ready for riveting them tomorrow. Barring catastrophe, I should make some serious headway towards getting these puppies finished up tomorrow.
