Empennage :: Rudder
Primed skeleton and riveted rudder
5 Hours

Picked up working on the rudder again and made some really good headway. I started off by dimpling the rudder skin. After that I primed all the rudder skeleton parts, then it was time to set some rivets! Since there are no ribs inside the rudder, all the rivets could be squeezed. Not as much fun as driving them but much quieter and a little more consistent.

The aftermath of setting all the rivets... one pretty good looking rudder!

Here's a shot of the leading edge of the rudder.

You're probably thinking, "Hey, that doesn't look very aerodynamic..." and you'd be correct. The extra skin you see past the spar gets rolled up so that they meet in the middle and form a nice rounded shape. Sounds pretty easy but I can tell you, it's not. I bought some PVC pipe and the method is this: lay the pipe down on the table, put copious amounts of duct tape along the pipe and metal to hold the two together and roll the skin up around the pipe to get a nice leading edge. What a pain in the hands! This is hard work and I didn't even get halfway done with rolling them. To be continued later, I'm calling it quits for the night.
