Preparation
Built the workbench

In anticipation of my empennage kit and tool kit arriving from Vans and Cleveland Aircraft Tools, I figure I need someplace to build! Because I live in an apartment, my space for building is very limited (actually it's limited to the space between the back of the couch and the dining table) so I need an appropriately sized workbench. There are plans out on the internet for an EAA workbench but that thing is HUGE so I more or less built the workbench by making it up as I went along.

Here is the frame going together. It's just some 1x3's that I put together in what seemed like a good, strong and sturdy manner.

Here's the air compressor and drill press that I bought from Harbor Freight. The compressor is small (only 4 gallons) and super noisy but it does the trick and works off of only 15 amps and 120 volts (in other words: a regular household plug). I feel like I got a pretty good deal as they were each under $100!

The workbench construction here is almost complete, just need to put on the bottom shelf. I just finished putting a coat of polyurethane on the work surface. This MDF (medium density fiberboard) takes a lot of polyurethane because it soaks it up like a sponge. When I'm done though, it should be a super smooth mirrored surface that is pretty much resistant to whatever I hit it with or spill on it!

Here's the finished workbench in it's place with all the tools on it. It's about 4 feet tall and the work surface is approximately 2x4 feet. Next purchase: toolbox.
