Empennage :: Trim Tab
Cut off trim tab tabs, drilled trim tab
3 Hours

Today I shifted gears from working on the left elevator to working on the trim tab. I've heard horror stories about how people make like 4 of these puppies before they get one that they are satisfied with and as far as I can tell it's because they screw up bending the tabs that form the sides of the tab. Since I've already messed this up once on the elevator and fairly easily made a riblet instead, I figured my easiest course of action would be to give up before I screwed it up again and go for the riblets right from the get-go.

Before the cuts:

During:

And after:

After cutting the tabs off, I proceeded to bend the trailing edge of the tab to its final angle. Then I clecoed most of the bits and pieces to the tab and match drilled the holes.

Then it came time to do the hinge. They don't overwhelm you with information about how exactly this goes on with spacing and everything so I did my best to match the drawings but then spent a few good minutes getting it parallel with the edge and all lined up to my liking. Then, clamp that sucker down tight, let-er-rip with the drill and you end up with one of these:

And one more for posterity.
