I hopped right into the project early this afternoon after a short day yesterday. I finished up drilling the left wing ribs to the spar and the did the right wing. After that, I got to take them apart and debur. After about an hour of deburring I took the ribs to the kitchen for a scrub in the sink. Of course none of this is documented in photos because it was boring and/or everything was covered in water. Lots of water. Once the ribs were nice and clean we (by we I mean the ribs and I) all went to the garage to do a little priming. I got about 1/3 the way through priming the ribs and then ran out of my spray can self-etching primer so off to Home Depot to get more. Because my new house is more nicely located close to industry, the round trip Home Depot run took 16 minutes! Here is about half of the ribs primed after the Home Depot run. After the primer dried (which took about 2 minutes) I clecoed the right wing ribs and spars back together and started setting rivets! Over the course of a few hours I only got the right rear spar riveted to the ribs but the others should go faster. There are lots of different sized rivets so I was constantly checking which ones went where. Also I got to use the rivet gun. I used it to drive the cupped head rivets which I have only done about 4 times total so they looked less than stellar. I was really focusing on holding the bucking bar correctly but that's pretty easy and it doesn't have to be perfect to be acceptable. Instead I should have focused more on holding the gun correctly. Lesson learned. That being said, I let the gun jump on about 3 rivets so they have nice big smiles across their tops... I think I'm going to leave them as I don't want to enlarge the holes by drilling them out. None of the smiles are too deep so I think they should be alright. If anyone else thinks otherwise please let me know! Look mom, no clecos!
