Wings :: Tanks
Riveted tank stiffeners
4.5 Hours

Today I unleashed the Proseal beast! This stuff is sooo sticky... Anyway I'll have to describe what I did because I was so sticky there was no way I could take pictures during the process.

Basically I cleaned everything up really well with paper towels and water, then I went to a rag soaked with MEK. This got rid of any trace of anything other than aluminum on the surface, I suspect. After the surfaces were clean, I put some rivets in a cup and poured in some MEK to clean them, too. As it turns out, MEK eats plastic cups so as it was disintegrating, I dashed into the kitchen to get a coffee mug. With the rivets now safely soaking, I mixed my first batch of Proseal in a plastic cup. I got the Proseal everywhere because it is super stringy and I got in a little bit of a hurry because I could only think about racing the 1-2 hour set time of the sealant. I tried many methods of mixing and applying the sealant to the stiffeners (mixing in the cup, mixing in a plastic bag, applying in a syringe, applying it in the plastic bag with the corner cut off) but what worked the best for me was to mix it just on a sheet of paper with the popsicle stick and then apply it from the paper to the stiffeners with the stick. Really it was like buttering toast except with the gooiest butter you could possibly imagine. To wet set the rivets (put a dab of sealant in the dimple where the head of the rivet sits on the skin), I pulled the cotton off the tip of a Q-tip (which was very easy with my incredibly sticky fingers) and used the Q-tip stick to get a little sealant in each dimple. Then I just placed a rivet in each gooey dimple and taped them in place. Then I set the stiffeners in place and proceeded to back rivet the stiffeners in place just like normal. After they were set, I applied a filet of sealant around each stiffener and then covered each rivet's shop head.

Here is the aftermath after LOTS of cleanup. Notice the filet around the stiffeners and the sealant-covered shop heads.
