Between the holidays and the cold weather the past few weeks, I have either been unable or unwilling to work on the project. Tonight, however, I got to start a new little mini project on the plane. Before the bottom skins go on and get rid of the access to the inside of the wing, you are supposed to do lots of things that require access to inside. One of those is making and attaching the aileron brackets to the rear spar. I started out by deburring the edges on the bench grinder because they were pretty rough and sharp. Then I clecoed them together and match drilled the parts to themselves and also to the rear spar. This is the inboard bracket which is in the middle of the wing (left wing shown). Here is the outboard bracket on the tip of the left wing. After drilling, deburring, and countersinking where required, I primed the parts and riveted them together and then riveted the brackets to the spar. I primed the sides of the angle that can't be seen here because they are steel brackets and I don't want any dissimilar metal corrosion. You'll notice here and in the picture above, the rivets next to the top skin and the bottom rivet on the long angle pieces are left open. The tops are left open because I was using the squeezer and it wouldn't reach and it was too late to get out the compressor and rivet gun. The bottom ones, as it turns out, need a flush rivet according to the plans. This wasn't mentioned anywhere on the drawing where it tells you how to build these so that's sort of frustrating. Once they are together, it's really tough to get a countersink in there so I will have to figure out how to get those holes countersunk. The outside looks pretty good so far. Obviously I couldn't get the squeezer on the bracket-to-rib rivets so I will need to get those tomorrow with the gun as well.
