Empennage :: Horizontal Stabilizer
Tapered and bent HS front spar reinforcement
4 Hours

Today It came time to match drill and taper the ends of the reinforcement angle for the HS front spar. The match drilling was easy, as expected. The tapering, however, was not. Tapering these was just like tapering the ends of the rear spar stiffeners except the metal was thicker and much more material needed to be removed. Seeing as I still don't have a bench grinder, I again did this using the handy Vixen file. Out of the four hours I worked to day, approximately 3.5 of it was spent hand filing the reinforcement angles... Eventually I finished that task and it came time to bend the tapered ends exactly 6.0 degrees. To do this I simply made a template on some notebook paper and bent the ends until they matched the angle on the paper. Worked like a charm and once I found the right way to leverage my weight, it was pretty smooth sailing.

Here both reinforcers are tapered and the right one has the 6 degree bends while the left one is still flat.

Now both are bent to a perfect 6.0 degrees!

Addendum to previous mental note: I really need to get a bench grinder...
